Job Type Full-time Description Position Summary: The Environmental Public Health Specialist position involves professional and technical responsibilities to promote community environmental health and enforce public health laws and regulations influenced by the environment. Individuals in this role conduct field inspections and evaluations to enforce public health practices aimed at disease prevention and promoting environmental health, life safety, and consumer protection. Pay range: $20.09-$23.52 Based on direct transferable experience Essential Activities: Environmental Public Health Specialist I Conduct inspections and investigations: Conduct field investigations and inspect public and private facilities (e.g., childcare facilities) regarding various environmental hazards (e.g., lead risk assessments) Inspect food service establishments, retail food stores, etc., for compliance with environmental public health laws, rules, and regulations. E.g., food protection, water supply, sewage treatment, waste disposal, vector control, life safety, hazards in electrical, venting, or plumbing installations, swimming pool operation, and other related environmental hazards. Review blueprint plans for new or renovated facilities related to equipment specifications, building materials, layout and flow of food, plumbing, electrical, etc. Conduct epidemiological studies of food and waterborne disease outbreaks or environmental health hazards Inspect construction and maintenance of individual water well construction and individual sewage treatment systems. Collects food, water, ice, or wastewater samples for bacteriological or chemical analysis and other samples (e.g., lead) for analysis as needed. Investigate complaints related to environmental public health law violations and potential hazards. Conduct Recall follow-up and reporting. Prepare investigative reports with recommendations for corrective measures. Conduct follow-up investigations Communication and Coordination: Communicate with supervisors to determine the status of environmental public health programs Environmental public health factors related to response and/or transportation accidents. Environmental epidemiology programs concerning toxic and hazardous chemicals (e.g., lead) and risk assessment. 2. Confer with officials, property owners, and business operators regarding regulations and policies of the Department of Health. Education and Training: 1. Teach Basic Sanitation and Food Managers courses Perform other related duties as necessary. Environmental Public Health Specialist II In addition to entry-level essential activities? Completion of all Pre and Post course training? Completion of 25 shadowed and 25 lead inspections? Completion of FDA courses (FD215, FD218, FD207, and FD312)? Completion of Standardization? ServSafe Manager and Proctor certified? At least 2 years' experience as an EPHS?? Coordinates a project or program for at least 1 year? Shows ability to stay on track with all inspections in their area? No disciplinary action within last 6 months or a year? Environmental Public Health Specialist III In addition to entry-level and EPHS II essential activities? Completion of Principles of Epidemiology course? Certified Environmental Health Specialist (CEHS) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) certification? Coordinates a larger program or multiple smaller programs/projects Subject matter expert for their program - fields all questions from staff and public? Assists in training and mentoring other staff members? At least 5 years of experience as an EPHS?? No disciplinary action within the last 6 months.? Requirements Qualifications & Education Requirements: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Bacteriology, Animal Science, Food Science, Soil Science, Sanitary Science, Environmental Health, or in a closely related physical or natural sciences.? Professional or technical environmental public health work experience involving one or more of the areas of special qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for a minimum of two years for de?ciencies in the required college education.? Environmental public health work experience involving one or more of the areas of special qualifying experience in the United States military may substitute on a year-for-year basis for de?ciencies in the required college education Valid driver's license. Foundational Public Health Services: Ability to follow the Missouri Foundational Public Health Services model's capabilities and areas of expertise as necessary for this position. Continuing Education: Although not mandatory, completing continuing education coursework is encouraged to maintain currency in the discipline. Additionally, emergency response training courses must be completed within established time frames, as identified by ordinance, statute, or administration. Annually, JCHD administration will require various coursework completions, not specific to any discipline, that is deemed beneficial to the organization as a whole. Work Conditions: This position entails work that may be required at multiple locations, involving minimal lifting/carrying. There may be occasional evening and/or weekend work, and individuals should be prepared to work in reasonable adverse weather conditions such as snow, rain, or heat. All staff at JCHD are designated as first responders during public health emergencies.
