Role Description

This is a full-time remote or hybrid role for a Research Analyst with preference for candidates based near national archives in College Park, MD or St. Louis, MO. The Research Analyst will be responsible for conducting historical research, analyzing casualty records. This position plays a critical role in developing and maintaining the historical records and data that informs field operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

Archival Research & Historical Documentation

  • Conduct thorough archival research and retrieve relevant historical records.
  • Investigate leads within allotted timeframes to complete documentation and digitization efforts.
  • Digitize archival materials using high-quality imaging methods to ensure clarity and accessibility.
  • Accurately categorize and label records following established historical citation standards.
  • Upload and maintain archival materials on designated servers and perform quality control checks.
  • Develop archive tracking systems to prevent duplication of research efforts.
  • Assist in managing legacy files and databases within the data management framework.

Casualty Resolution Research

  • Conduct comprehensive research on unresolved casualties and unidentified remains interred in U.S. cemeteries.
  • Prepare detailed case reports, cemetery analyses, and geographically focused research studies.
  • Formulate recommendations for the disinterment and identification of unidentified remains.
  • Assist in communications with foreign representatives, embassies, and casualty/mortuary offices.

Outreach and Professional Liaison

  • Support outreach initiatives including oral history projects and liaising with external organizations.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with professionals, institutions, and stakeholders that advance Project Recover’s mission.

  • Night and weekend availability required when mission demands arise.
  • Contribute to Project Recover’s non-profit development efforts.
  • Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned by Project Recover leadership.

  • Flexible and adaptable to evolving priorities and mission needs.
  • Self-directed and proactive; exercises initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro is strongly preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree preferred; minimum of five (5) years of professional historical research experience, including academic research.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting archival research and handling historical records.

Must be willing to travel up to 30%
