Job Description Instrumental Music Teacher/Band Director

Reports to: Principal of DHS and DMS

Open Date: May 14, 2025

Close Date: Until Filled

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goal: To guide students to achieve musical expression and understanding

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in the grade level, subject area(s) assigned.

3. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

4. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

5. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

6. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.

7. Ability to develop and implement curriculum to the needs of students at the designated grade level(s) and in the designated content area(s)/subject(s).

8. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education. This includes planning and directing experiences in large performing groups, technical instruction, chamber music, listening and music theory.

2. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of all students.

3. Develop an appropriate and justifiable system for evaluation and grading of students.

4. Prepare the marching band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances in keeping with the expectations of the school, principals and community.

5. Stress and exemplify good citizenship.

6. Organize and discipline students at a high level during classes and at public events.

7. Prepare and distribute materials that inform students and their parents the grade requirements and band policies, i.e. handbooks or printed handouts.

8. Assume responsibility for coordinating all auxiliary or adjunct groups which perform with the band.

9. Work with the principals in developing a program budget.

10. Follow proper purchasing procedures.

11. Work, under supervision of the principals, to raise necessary funds for financing the program, soliciting and organizing parental and community assistance where deemed necessary and advisable.

12. Insure proper maintenance and use of instrumental music facilities.

13. Insure proper inventory, use and maintenance of supplies, materials and equipment.

14. Strive to maintain good relations between the instrumental music department and the remainder of the school. Attend faculty meetings and other school functions.

15. Strive to maintain a professional and ethical image in all associations and circumstances with other directors, adjudicators, school personnel, etc.

16. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.

17. Participate in professional learning opportunities and clinics.

18. Maintain the highest possible standards for the instrumental music program.

19. Maintain an intense and continuing interest in the welfare, safety and all-around development of each student.

20. Insure fair and impartial treatment of all students in the instrumental music program.

21. Conduct field trips and outside of school activities in accordance with Board Policies.

22. Strive to maintain good community relations.

23. Strive to maintain good relations with related organizations such as the cheerleaders, athletic and booster clubs.

24. Publish and distribute a calendar of band events that coordinate with all other school events.

Physical requirements:

Employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Terms of employment:

Nine-month employee, in accordance with the Board approved salary schedule. Work schedule includes a 40-hour work week, with scheduled days and times up to the supervisor.
